A wonderful pair of French gold and silver earrings, which date from the 1700’s.

They have three black spot (dot)* diamond paste stones on the front, which have been closed-back set and have their original back wires.

Suspended from the “tops” (or day time earrings) are “night” drops for evening or special occasion wear.

The drops are closed-back set with eight, black spot diamond paste stones in an open teardrop shape.

The whole is silver topped, gold backed, as it was the norm in the English Georgian period.

These would sparkle like diamonds, depending upon movement and the play of light-–as these were created when they would be viewed by candlelight.

This day/night type of earring is sometimes called tops/drops, or convertibles.

*A small black dot/ spot of pitch at the culet which is the hallmark of early paste jewelry, created to mimic the open culet of early diamond cuts.
