Those who know this artist’s paintings would probably think of him as a tonalist landscape artist. Indeed, landscapes constitute the core of his work. However, as may be seen in another Sheehan work on our website (#27097), he is a gifted portraitist, as well.

Less common than landscapes or portraits, however, are landscapes containing people. “Back from the Village” is one of these, and it depicts a moment to which Dennis has returned on at least a few occasions: a small human figure in the middle of a large landscape.

In this painting, a woman appears to walk along a path near a stream. Judging from the artist’s title, written on one of the stretchers, her objective appears to be the house at the edge of a distant meadow. Beyond it all, a moon is rising. Her presence gives scale to the scene - a bonus for the viewer.
