The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, a double track steel cantilever bridge spanning the Hudson River, was completed in 1889 and remained in service until it was damaged by fire in 1974. In 1998 the bridge owners, delinquent in tax payments, gave the bridge to the non-profit organization that oversaw the restoration of the steel structure and the installation of the hundreds of concrete panels that now form the pedestrian/bicycle path.

If you've never walked these two bridges, we strongly recommend it. The Hudson is a very beautiful river, and there's no more dramatic way to witness it.

"America is a great story and there is a river on every page of it." (Charles Kuralt)
