Please note: when these were photographed for the Fox Valley show, we neglected to return the drip pans, which we had removed to facilitate polishing. In these images, they are restored.

A striking pair of brass sconces mounted on a hexagonal plate lavishly decorated with repoussé. Each of the back plates is adorned with 14 convex circular and ovoid shapes; each central circle is flanked by four ovoid figures, one in each of the corners, while trios of smaller circles fill the spaces between them. The backgrounds are filled in with clusters of fruit, leaves, and subtle punching.

Extending from the front of each sconce is a pair of candle sockets, mounted on the end of a scroll-shaped arm and secured by a turned finial. A peg at the back of the socket unit drops into a cast brass fist.

Each sconce was at one time fitted with a reflector that sat above the octagon, secured by a flange that slid behind a metal strap at the back of the sconce. Voids in the upper corners of both sconces indicate that the original straps were lost long ago. Although someone later installed replacement flanges, the reflectors themselves have not survived. Fortunately, they have not been replaced by modern "improvements".

Except for the above-mentioned losses, the sconces are in good  condition. They can easily be mounted on a wall by the hangers attached to the rear of the back plate. The backs measure 11-1/4" wide by 12" high, and the candle sockets on their arms extend approximately 4" from the wall.

Dutch, ca. 1690
