A large brass alms dish

A highly developed brass alms dish with the figures of Adam, Eve, and the serpent in its center. In addition to the three principals, the center medallion contains two four-legged creatures and a tree bursting with apples. Eve is handing an apple to her unsuspecting mate, and the world as we know it is about to be born.

The drama is contained within concentric circles of geometric and botanic motifs. The dish is in excellent condition, although parts of the two principals’ anatomy have become casualties of either prudery or an overzealous polishing cloth.

English or Continental, ca. 1600

Diameter: 19 ½”; Depth: 2”
