An exquisite covered box for the storage of small table cutlery.

Shaped like the typical larger examples from the 18th century, this later version was crafted with great skill and care. The exterior is veneered in burl walnut, with banded inlay at the edges. The shaped lid is secured with a working brass latch with its key, while there is a brass handle at the top and a brass boss on the face. The top opens on two brass hinges. The entire box rests on a handsome base.

Inside are openings for spoons of two sizes and knives and forks. The openings are framed and bisected by banding like that on the exterior.

The piece is signed by its maker: Giulio Giannini, of Florence, where this tradition of fine craftsmanship still flourishes.

Italian, late 19th century.

Width: 5 ½”; Height: 9 ½”; Depth: 7”
