A small Scandinavian bride’s or picnic box

A simple bent-wood box fitted with a shaped lid that is held in place by a pair of notched vertical posts, which are bent outward to release the lid.

The bent wood is sewn together using a thin length of splint.

The design in the sides and lid is done in a combination of scratch carving and punchwork.

This type of box has ancient roots; it was used to store food and other valued commodities.

Swedish or Norwegian, 19th century
