An exceptionally decorative early spun alms plate

A large brass plate festooned with repoussé, chasing, and punchwork.

The domed center of the dish is surrounded by a ring of leaves and grapes, which are framed in a ring of chased foliate shapes. The bowl then rises to near rim height and a concentric ring of repousse forms. The rim is comprised of two more concentric rings: the inner a series of punches, while the edge is gadrooned.

The face of the plate has been polished countless times in its life, while the back has been allowed to tarnish.

There are repairs at the rim, and a small brass patch has been riveted onto it to repair the area of greatest damage.

An excellent example of the form, with a history of use and restoration.

Continental, ca. 1690

Diameter: 17 ½”; Height: 2 ¼”

Price: $ 625
