17th century Delft tile with a naked cleric sitting on a stone

The subject of this unusual tile is a mystery to us. Could the three circles be bubbles created by the device in his right hand? His hair suggests that he might be a monk, but why no robe? The stone outcropping provides no context. Perhaps it is simply a tile painter’s diversion from the tedium endless repetition. We only know that we’ve never seen another.
