17th century Delft tile with pastoral subject

Although his staff suggests that he is tending sheep, this tile appears to suggest that he is otherwise engaged. Such off-color content is not rampant in Dutch tiles of the 17th and 18th centuries, but it occasionally evokes a smile. We assume that rendering stock scenes on a hard five-inch square surface under the pressures of production may have encouraged an occasional naughty moment like this one.
