Although originally a tea caddy, this handsome veneered and inlaid box has lost its interior fittings and has been fitted with a mirror under its lid, making it quite perfect for the storage of jewelry, small documents, or (one supposes) tea bags.
The box sits on a stepped base and its lid is framed in a concave rising slope. In between these extremities are two large rectangles, inlaid in differing styles. A similar decorative scheme is applied to the central portion of the lid, which is fitted with a brass bail handle. While someone has found an attractive key for the box, it does not function beyond its aesthetic role.
English, ca. 1790
