A period repoussé brass candle sconce

An exceptional elongated oval one-arm repoussé candle sconce with a candle socket and drip pan. The center of the sconce is a smaller elongated, oval, convex reflector meant to diffuse the light of the candle burning in front of it. This oval is framed in a raised border which, along with the gadrooned outer rim, encloses seven floral decorations. Four of these appear to be roses, and three are seven-petaled flowers. The decoration also includes stems, leaves and punched botanic details. The edges of the sconce are wrapped around a stout wire.

The sconce has a brass candle holder, which has a foot that drops into the human fist at the base of the sconce. The holder is made in three pieces: a candle socket, a drip pan, and an elegant scroll-shaped bracket into which the socket is screwed, the shaped foot that supports it all.

There are iron plates at the top and bottom of the verso, one to reinforce where the arm of the candle holder fits, and another, a triangular hanger that would have been for a reflector, now lost. The sconce is quite light, making hanging a simple task.

Probably Dutch, 1700's

Sconce width: 9 ½”; Sconce height:12 ½”; Depth of the arm 6"
