An early elm hanging candle box

A tall, tapering wooden container for storing candles in the home. The box is made of four long, narrow elm boards, joined to each other in a well-executed series of butt joints. The edges of the face are treated attractively with a moulding plane. This same moulding plane was used to embellish the front and sides of the base, which is nailed into the sides. While the original hand-forged nails are still present, they have been reinforced with nails of more recent vintage.

The back board extends upward and shaped like a sheaf of wheat or a thistle. There is a hole in this extension for hanging.

There is slight damage to the moulded edges of the bottom, but the box is otherwise in excellent condition, with ample evidence of age and wear as well as a very warm reddish-brown color throughout.

Welsh, ca. 1780

Width at the top of the box: 5”; Overall height: 18”
