An early Dutch “onion” bottle

Named for their vegetable-like shape, these early free-blown bottles were mass produced for the distribution of wine and other liquids. One assumes that their dark color was intended to keep light away from the beverage, thereby preserving its freshness. This example is of classic shape and color and has relatively light wear and no damage.
