Perhaps the best candle box we’ve ever shown, this one is made of deeply patinated oak and has a most elegant form. The back extends above the box, giving it a subtle but distinctive crest, and the sliding cover terminates in a smaller, matching crown. The raised “panel” that covers the center of the lid was planed into the surface, not applied, and the crest is an extension of it. Below the end of the box, the panel is trimmed with a tiny, raised moulding, which has broken at the lower right. The lid rides smoothly in a rabbet planed into the upper inside edge of the box. There is a small break on the lower right of this rabbet, which may have occurred when the moulding was broken. Other than this minor loss, the piece is in excellent condition.

English, ca. 1780
