Six flowing, snake-like solid brass arms extend outward from the central core, each terminating in a drip pan and a socket, which screw into the end of the arm. The central core was cast in four pieces, which we’ll list from bottom to top:

1. The tailpiece, formed with two disks, the lower of which provides a stylish decoration, while the upper supports the rest of the core. An iron shaft is threaded into the tailpiece, and an oval ring hangs from its drop finial.

2. Immediately above the tailpiece is a large brass ball which, besides its decorative function, reflects and magnifies the candlelight

3. Above the ball is a long brass section which contains the sturdy ring into which tenons on the arms extend and are pinned. Above the ring is a decorative baluster.

4. The top section is the ring from which the chandelier is held. The iron shaft extends through a hole in its center, where an iron wedge is inserted and hammered tight to bind the chandelier’s several parts solidly together.

Each of the arms is identified with the letters XXIX and a series of from one to six shallow punch marks. These punch marks are keyed to corresponding marks at each opening in the supporting ring. The XXIX is not so clear. It could be either an identifier in a factory where several versions (29 or more?) were in production, or an owner’s identifier for multiple chandeliers in an extremely large hall. Something to ponder.

This is an exceptionally beautiful version of the chandeliers that lighted homes and churches in the 17th century, with the pleasing symmetry that has endured through succeeding centuries.

Brass S-hook and chain are included. Since the arms can be removed and disassembled, packing and shipping are not difficult.

Probably Dutch, ca. 1800

Weight: approximately 18 lbs.
