This form was evidently very appealing in the early seventeenth century; we’ve sold many over the years. While almost all were brass, most had traces of the silver that once covered the entire surface. This pair has been cared for in a way that has preserved their silver plating. While the brass foundation can be seen peeking through many of the corners, this pair has retained their silver exteriors. The effect is quite stunning.
The popularity of this form was no doubt due to the amount of detail in the candlestick. Except for three round segments at the junction of base and shaft, above the first knop, and below the candle socket, the base and shaft have an octagonal cross section, developed by numerous graduating steps.
An exceptional example of a familiar form.
French, ca. 1720
