A small ox horn mug with applied pewter handle

We’ve bought and sold scores of horn beakers over the years, but we’ve never seen anything quite like this little gem. The horn drinking vessel is made in the typical manner, with a horn disc popped into a groove near the bottom of the cup. This one is exceptional in that, rather than expanding outward at the rim, its form is inverted. This is not a beaker; it is a mug. The decorative pewter handle is attached to the vessel with tiny, forged nails.

A remarkable piece in excellent condition.

English, ca. 1800
