According to Merriam-Webster, a fleam was “a sharp lancet formerly used for bloodletting”. Another internet source informs us that “Fleams used for large animals often were accompanied by a mallet or fleam stick used to strike the blade and quickly drive the point into the vein.” Regardless of its somewhat macabre history, this little treenware piece exemplifies the best qualities of treenware in the areas of form, decoration, texture, color, and legend. A must for the collector of treenware and medical antiques.

English, ca. 1800
