Antique French wedding pillow This ornate antique French wedding cushion in deep blue velvet was designed to display a fine wedding wax headdress, crown, or tiara. Now used mostly for the display of jewels, the grandeur of these cushions is in their rich fabric and opulent metallic passementerie.

This wonderful cushion consists of a firm covering of blue silk velvet which encloses a hard, horsehair stuffing, domed at the center top and slightly flattened at the bottom. Its embellishment: gilt metallic adornments are hand sewn, at each corner an extravagant knot formed by three gilt metallic braids which attach to a large tassel. At the front there is an arched circle of scalloped gilt metallic braid above and below the medial braiding, forming another circle.

The four identical tassels are formed from a wooden ball at the top covered by very fine gilt metallic thread. Attached to the tops are coils of gilt metallic bouillon cascade downward. A row of scalloped gilt metallic braid outlines the outside edge of the entire cushion.

It has been loved and is in good condition, sits solidly upon the tabletop, and is perfect for the display of jewels, or a metal crown/tiara.

French, late 1800’s

Price: $395

Measurements:  8 ½” square x 5 ¾“ thick/tall, the corner tassels 2 ½” long.
