Although the montage is mounted on a square ceramic back plate, it is evident from surface details and minor in-painting that they were once part of a wall, probably in Holland, very long ago. All are from the same well-known series of tiles of the period; two illustrate tulips, and the other two, frittelaria. Each flower grows from a small triangle of earth and is enclosed in a blue diamond. The corner design in each is adapted from the fleur-de-lis. The thickness of the assembled group is one inch, but the thickness of the tiles themselves can be seen to be a sliver under ½”. The back is fitted with a metal bar from which the piece may be suspended.
