According to The Oxford English Dictionary, Paktong, or Chinese nickel silver, first appears in English sources in 1775. Paktong is an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel, and it has a close enough resemblance to silver to be the source of some confusion in the antiques market today. Paktong was used in the manufacture of European candlesticks in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
This highly embellished petal-based example was probably made in England in the middle of the 18th century. It is in very good condition, missing only its bobeche.
English, ca. 1770
Dimensions: Base, point to point: 5 ¼”; Height: 9”
