Early stool with barley-twist stretchers

An elegant stool with five stretchers, each with barley turnings between central double spools.

The front and rear stretchers connect the legs near their midpoint, allowing room for feet beneath the stool. The side stretchers are closer to floor level and are connected to each other by the fifth, medial stretcher. Each leg terminates in a small, tulip-shaped foot.

The blocks facing front and back are decorated with shallow carving.

The stool has been reupholstered in soft leather, with brass bosses at seat height.

The wood has a warm glow, and the stool has retained its full, original height.

English, ca. 1700

Dimensions: 16” X 16”; Height: 17 ½
