A sleek boarded coffer, or sword chest, a mere ten inches deep, with bootjack ends and interior till.

The face and sides are decorated with a narrow applied moulding, balancing the slight overhang of the lid,

and the ends of the face were chip-carved, a technique frequently employed to prevent splitting.

The lid is joined to the chest with long strap hinges and finished with an attractive planed moulding.

Each of the six boards comprising the coffer is made of oak or elm with strong character and dramatic grain.

A very refined country piece with great visual interest.

Excellent condition.

Dimensions: 34-1/2” X 10”; Height: 16”

English, ca. 1680
