A pair of handsome side chairs in a style commonly associated with American side chairs of the 18th century, these found in England and undeniably English.

The virtuosic turnings in the split spindles of the back slats are identical to those in the rear posts and are echoed in the stretchers beneath the seat that, in their complex interplay, support the chair securely.

The rails that hold the back slats are cut from a thin oak board, slightly curved to accommodate the sitter’s back, although these chairs were, again like their American counterparts, not designed for comfort.

Duplicates of the crest rails are found below the seat.

The rush seats are tight and secure, as are the entire chairs.

Dimensions: Seats:19-1/4” X 15-1/2”; Height: 43”; Seat height: 18”

English, ca. 1700
