A handsome and sturdy set of four oak backstools. Upholstery restored in the 19th century.

The well-worn leather is secured by a copious array of brass bosses and is in good shape. The comfortable seat is supported on rails resting on two turned legs at the front and mortised into the rear legs, which extend upward to form the back.

All are very sittable, with no loose joints. The side rails have been tightened with screws, which are embedded in the rear of the posts and invisible to the casual observer.

English, ca. 1690
