Oak chest on stand

A commanding chest of three side-hung drawers, each faced with applied mouldings flanking a central vertical panel. The fronts of the stiles are decorated with applied split spindles, and the drawers are separated from one another by a shaped rail. The short stand upon which the chest sits is comprised of four bulbous turned legs, joined by shaped rails in front and on the sides. The back is, as to be expected, invisible and undecorated. We believe that the backing boards have been replaced. The drawer pulls, which were probably replaced with wooden knobs in the 19th century, now have appropriate brass pulls.

 English, ca. 1720
