A small Charles II oak bible box

A pleasing oak bible box, its face decorated with shallow carving of free forms perhaps suggesting fish.

The carved surface was then embellished further with several small punched circles. (The urge to suggest bubbles here is strong, but we’ll not succumb.)

In the center is an iron lock plate.

The lid was originally secured with cotter pin hinges; both of these have failed, and at different times, as may be seen in the circular arcs scratched outwards from the two hinge locations. In their place we now have a cotter pin hinge on the left, in the original hinge holes, and a small butterfly on the right, offset from the original placement.

Half of the original hasp remains, attached to the underside of the lid.

English, 1660 – 80

Dimensions: 23 ¾” X 14”; Height: 8 ¾”
