Charles II oak wainscot armchair

A small but comfortable 17th century oak wainscot armchair with carved crest rail and a large oak panel chamfered into its back. The crest rail is carved with overlapping lunettes, and the space between them is filled with botanical bits. There is no evidence that this chair ever had a crest like those often found on chairs of this type. The front posts are bobbin-turned, and the arms – one of which may be an early replacement – have a comfortable undulation. The base is decorated with a wide variety of moulding patterns, and the stretchers – particularly the front one – have ample evidence of use and wear.

The elm seat has an old triangular repair which is hardly visible.

Excellent color; tight and sturdy

English, ca. 1660
