A striking American country fall-front desk with an attractive interior. Each of the four large, graduated drawers is fitted with appropriate brass pulls and matching escutcheons. The fall front has a matching escutcheon and a working lock and key on its face. The lopers are fitted with small brass pulls, and the desk sits on two ball feet at the front.

When the fall-front is brought forward and drops to the lopers, the interior, with six drawers faced in maple and two pairs of open compartments, is fully exposed. The lighter wood of the interior contrasts pleasingly with the darker exterior and provides a slightly enclosed, more intimate workspace. The varied sizes and proportions of the drawers create visual interest as well as convenient storage. Each drawer has one or two brass pulls.

The back is made of three pine boards, the widest measuring 18 inches. The brasses are appropriate replacements, as are the four feet.

American, ca. 1780
