The rear posts and central splat curve backwards rather dramatically, all joining a shaped crest rail.

Beneath the rail are three carved, pierced panels and another, larger, panel in which are carved images of two human figures.

This latter panel is chamfered and is mortised into the frame.

The side and rear apron rails are shaped, but the front apron rail and legs are decorated with applied, pierced carvings, which are nailed in place.

The seat is made from a single board, sporting a large knot or burl, visible from below.

The entire chair is painted a vivid red and, in addition to being a striking decorative piece, is sturdy and sittable.

Chinese, 19th century.

Seat dimensions: 19” X 14”; Seat height: 21 ¼”; Overall height: 41”

Price: $225
