Two hand-made oak backstools or side chairs in the tradition of these distinctive pieces from the North. Although these do not date from the 1600’s, we believe that they were made by hand by a chairmaker continuing that tradition into the 18th century.

The wide, carved, double back rails have the characteristic arc of this type, and the rear posts that support them are decorated with distinctive carving and punchwork. The front posts supporting the seat are turned, with blocks near their centers to receive the raised turned front stretchers. The other three stretchers on each chair are left plain.

The chairs and their plank seats are solid and secure. Although they’ve been together for a couple of centuries, one has faded more than the other, perhaps because it received more sunlight.

English, 1770 – 90
