A 17th-century oak side table

A handsome table with drawer and high ball-turned front stretcher. The four legs are fashioned with matching turnings above and below the central block. This form is mirrored in the four original feet. The placement of the front stretcher enables one to sit at the table without obstruction. The attractive top is constructed of two relatively thin boards, adding refinement to the piece.

The drawer was originally side hung and, although the rails for it are still in the piece, runners have been added beneath the drawer and now carry the weight of the drawer. The moulding on the face of the drawer may be an 18th-century addition, and the replacement brass pull has restored the type and placement of the original, which appears to have been replaced by a bale handle at some later time.

There is wear to the feet, but they are original and near original height.

Wonderful color and classic 17th-century form.

English, ca. 1680

Top: 35” X 21 ¾”; Height: 29”
