Rare hide-bound studded traveling chest

A wooden dome-topped chest covered with leather and decorated with brass and iron bosses nailed through darker leather strips arranged in geometric patterns with stars at their centers.

The interior and the underside of the lid are covered with the original printed fabric, and the lid is attached with small iron cotter pin hinges.

The chest is elevated on applied bracket feet, and the original lock and hasp have survived.

Each end is fitted with an iron handle for ease in carrying.

Probably Spanish, 17th century
