Oak X-base stand with octagonal top

A striking little stand with a shaped top supported by a long, narrow gunbarrel-turned oak post.

The base consists of two shaped feet, which intersect to form a cross. The end of each foot curves pleasingly to the floor, and the uppermost surfaces are edged with two parallel grooves.

There is a circular disc beneath the top which we believe to have been added by a restorer to repair the split top and to provide stability. It is both effective and unobtrusive, as it is invisible under normal conditions. There is also a small patch in one of the feet.

English, ca. 1750

The top measures 13” between opposing sides, and the stand is 27-1/2” tall.
