An early example of this rare and unique form of gateleg table. A trapezoidal, four-legged base supports one half of the round top, while a fifth leg marries the base at the rear, swinging out in the manner of a gateleg to support the other half. The legs are exceptionally robust, with only minimal decoration, and they are joined by stout stretchers at top and bottom.

The single drawer and the two side rails are embellished with two densely-carved demilunes, and the blocks which receive their tenons are decorated with applied oak bosses. The table has very good color and is in exceptionally good condition.

English, ca. 1620 - 40
