A small oak backstool with four reeded banisters between a moulded seat rail and a lovely carved crest. The rear posts are reeded, as well, and terminate in a carved finial.
The front legs of the chair are turned and are connected by a turned stretcher. The sides and rear have a single wooden stretcher, although evidence suggests that the sides may have had an additional stretcher near the floor and that the chair was originally a bit taller.
The single-board plank seat is planed with an attractive moulding on three sides.
The chair is tight and secure, and it has lovely color.
English (probably Yorkshire), ca. 1680
Seat dimensions: 17 ¼” X 13 ½”; Seat height: 17”; Overall height: 38 ½”
