Early oak coffer with shoe feet and applied mouldings

A very interesting oak chest, perhaps transitional, dating from the late 1500’s to early 1600s. Created as a boarded chest, it is joined with rose-head nails, many invisible as detailed mouldings were applied to cover the joinery and dress up the piece. These heavy mouldings are the only decoration here, other than the lock plate and hasp (now lost).
Mouldings, attached with pegs, cover the face and the top, creating a two-panel effect on each. There are strap hinges under the lid. Tenons at the bottom of the sides of the chest extend into mortises in the substantial shoe feet, into which they are secured with pegs.
