Oak bible box with guilloche carving

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A compact little box with carved face and sides. The pattern of intertwined guilloches is repeated four times, twice on the face, and once on each side, framed by a field of punch- and gouge-work. A small lock plate is attached to the middle of the face, and there is a band of planed beading just above the applied bottom.

The inside of the box is clean and solid. The original three fine cotter pin hinges have failed and, as is often the case, have been replaced with forged strap hinges.

Good color and condition.

English, ca. 1660

Dimensions: 28” X 14 ½”; 7 ¼” tall
