A humble, early oak backstool

Constructed just like its larger siblings, this little stool has an attractively turned front stretcher and a concise stepped moulding in its side- and cross-stretchers. The plank seat is decorated with a simple thumbnail moulding, while the back of the chair has the plainest woodwork, perhaps because it was meant to house a fabric center. The seat, which is original, has been repaired with a narrow patch spanning the seat near its center.

The chair is solid and sturdy, and we’ve not done anything to embellish or polish its dry surface. A lovely piece of country furniture.

English, ca. 1690

Seat: 14 ¼” X 12 ¼”; Seat height: 16 ¼”; Overall height: 32 ½”
