A striking chest, with drawers outlined with an applied moulding of a lighter wood, probably walnut, and a pair of brass drops. Each drawer is made to appear to be a pair, with a vertical block in the center, between a pair of rectangles of moulding suggesting two drawers. The sides are constructed of two narrow vertical panels, set into a joined frame.
A note about the hardware: While the brass pulls are appropriate replacements for the originals, a cursory examination of the interiors of the faces reveals that the original pulls were replaced long ago with bale handles, in response to changes in taste during the chest’s original history. Also, one might note that only the second and bottom drawers have escutcheons. This is a common feature of chests of the period; the top and third drawers were locked by a narrow piece of wood which engaged the back of their lower rails. Access to these two drawers was gained by unlocking the drawer below and pushing up on the wooden “lock” from inside. These locking boards are no longer present, but evidence of their existence is confirmed by looking at the bottoms of drawers one and three.
The chest is in excellent condition, with side-hung drawers that move easily. The stile feet have been tipped and braced with spandrels.
