An excellent early Yorkshire backstool

A classic Yorkshire chair with plank seat and lavishly carved rear splats. The carving on this chair is excellent, and each splat is a virtuosic display of the carver’s art. The splats are held by two vertical stiles, each terminating in an elaborate carved curl and each having an applied split spindle. Three turned acorn drop finials are suspended from each splat, and there is additional carving beneath the spindles.

The base is constructed of two turned and two plain legs, and there is a turned stretcher in the front, with two undecorated stretchers on each side and one in the rear. The lower edges of the rails holding the plank seat are modestly moulded.

The stool is tight and solid, with no significant losses or restoration. This is an outstanding example of the form.

English, Yorkshire or Derbyshire, ca. 1680

Seat: 18” X 15; Seat height: 19 ¼”; Overall height: 42 ¼”
