A tall, period oak joint stool

The most striking feature of this stool is probably the amount of detail in the turnings of its four legs. The elongated cup-and-cover near the center is framed by a profusion of other common forms. At the tops of these are the four rails of the apron, each carved with one (the ends) or two (the sides) demilunes. The bottoms of the legs are held by unadorned stretchers.

The top, an old replacement, has been treated with a thumbnail moulding around its entire perimeter. The stool has the expected wear caused by years of use in the home.

English, ca. 1690
