Purchased from a Long Island estate, this is an exceptional country armchair. The sharply canted back is framed by two substantial oak stiles, joined near the floor by a single stretcher and above the seat by three broad stretchers, the topmost shaped to cover the tips of the stiles. The back is made of three riven panels, the uppermost of which is carved, as is the exceptionally wide upper rail.

In Oak Furniture: The British Tradition, Victor Chinnery provides a photograph of a similar chair (Figure 4:171) and gives as its origin as Westmoreland, in the north of England, spanning the southern Lake District and the northern Dales. Chinnerey’s description suits this chair perfectly: A plain and sturdy farmhouse chair.

The shaped arms and their supports are replacements, as are the bun feet in the front. The back legs (and hence, the chair) appear to have their original height.

English, Yorkshire or the Lake District, ca. 1680

Seat dimensions: 23” X 14 ¾”; Seat height: 18 ¼”; Overall height: 46”
