The rear panel with its striking quatrefoil carving is framed by two rails, each with planed moulding, and the chair’s canted rear posts. Identical moulding dresses the three seat rails. An exceptional detail is found on the back of the chair, where the rails enclosing the panel are moulded as well. On the lower rail are the initials “H H”. The front posts are turned simply and are relatively light. Similarly, the arms are lighter than many, and the petite size of the chair and its lighter arms suggest that this may have been a lady’s chair.

The chair is in good condition, sturdy and tight, with only a few repairs. The mortise joining the left arm has been patched capably, as has the union of the arm with the front post. The center panel, a single board, cracked as it dried and has been mended with three staples in front and two small iron bands in the back. One of the legs has been tipped by quarter inch.
