A beautiful high-backed 17th-century oak backstool, joined with pegs and solid. The tall back is surmounted with a wonderful moulded and double-lobed crest which terminates in inward C-scrolls. The crest design is repeated in the stretcher at the base of the central splat. The splat is a fielded panel, which greatly enhances the chair.
This canted back chair has well-turned front legs and a tapering, raised front stretcher. This is an interesting design seen in English and Welsh seat furniture from c. 1670 as houses became cleaner, thus avoiding the need for a low stretcher at floor level on which to place feet to raise them above a dirty floor. A very good example of this type. Ex. Fiske and Freeman.
English, ca. 1670
Dimensions of seat: 20 ¾” at the front, tapering to 14 ¾” at the rear; 15” deep. Overall height: 42”; seat height: 16”.
Price: $375
