An early carving of a robed figure

The thin face of the figure (a woman or perhaps a cleric) is crowned with flowing hair, and the robe is open below the waist. A fleur-de-lis adorns the waist, and the robe is decorated with punchwork.
Through the centuries the piece has suffered a few minor losses, as well as many splits along the grain. A small wooden peg has been added to secure the figure’s left arm.
Wonderful color, fascinating detail, and an iconographic puzzle to be solved.
Probably French, 17th century or earlier
Height: 21 ½”
