Slender Charles II gateleg table with barley-turned elements

From the collection of a prominent New York collector, the base of this table is made up of barley twist horizontal and vertical structural pieces. The only exceptions are the upper rails of the two gates, which are shaped with an appealing design with cut out scrolls.

The top is comprised of a narrow central board to which the two leaves are attached. When the leaves are dropped, the table is just over one foot in width, giving the table its sleek form. There is a slender drawer in each end of the table.

A particularly attractive example of this form.

English, ca. 1680

Length: 45 ¼”; Width open: 44 ½”; Width closed: 13 ½”; Height 27 ⅝”
