As its name suggests, the box is fitted with a sloping lid, which could serve as a writing surface, while the interior provided secure storage for small items. The façade is decorated with carved, intertwining vines in two panels that suggest a pair of hearts. In the background are carved grapes and leaves, perhaps suggesting bounty, and, in each panel, two acorns, perhaps alluding to Charles II, the restored king. Beneath the central iron lock are the initials “A L”. The spacious interior has a shallow, galleried shelf at its back, and the ends of the face and lid are finished with chip carving. The lid is joined to the box with two forged strap hinges, which appear to be original. As one would expect, the sides are undecorated, while the back is only roughly finished. The box is in very good condition, including its original lock and hasp.
