Purchased from the estate of a New York collector, this little box has a great deal of charm and detail. Its face is carved with a pair of overlapping demilunes, framed by carved tulips. The base and the lid are decorated with a thumbnail moulding on their sides and front. The sides are undecorated, as is the lid, although the irregular figure in the board provides considerable visual interest.

This box is somewhat unusual in that it was made with a dovetail joint at each of its corners. Dovetail joints entered the English furniture maker’s skill set in the second half of the 17th century, helping us to date this box. The small strap hinges appear to be original, as is the lock box, although it disrupts the carving, a common feature of 17th century boxes.

Excellent dark color and good condition, with wear consistent with age.

English, ca. 1670 – 90

Dimensions of lid: 21” X 14”; Height: 7 ¼”

Price: $750
